THE BROOKLYN BALL
The Brooklyn Ball is a LGBTQ charity extravaganza benefitting Callen-Lorde Community Health Center as they open their first Brooklyn location in fall 2019. This event is a fabulous mixer highlighting cultural leaders of color in the community with a photo installation, performances, fashions, and dance. This is a non-corporate sponsored event, built by the generosity and convening of our local community.
The style theme this year is “Leaves of Grass” an homage to the Bicentennial Walt Whitman and their canonical book of queer poetry. The evening will be a glam green gathering weaving inspiration from green plants, the natural world, poetry, and language. We encourage outrageous looks incorporating things such as succulents, cacti, terrariums, air plants, astroturf, and anything green of this nature.
ABOUT THE CHARITY
Callen-Lorde Community Health Center provides sensitive, quality health care and related services targeted to New York’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities — in all their diversity — regardless of ability to pay. To further this mission, Callen-Lorde promotes health education and wellness, and advocates for LGBT health issues.
Callen-Lorde’s grassroots heritage dates back nearly 50 years to the St. Marks Clinic and the Gay Men’s Health Project – two volunteer-based clinics that provided safe and confidential sexual health and primary care regardless of ability to pay. These clinics merged in 1983 to form Community Health Project, a mostly volunteer-staffed, episodic care program housing the nation’s first community-based HIV clinic.
